ARTIST STATEMENT

I was born on the East Coast of Nova Scotia, and grew up surrounded by the industrial refinery fields where generations of my family worked. The surface landscape of tank fields, the sea, forests and my family’s extraordinary gardens have all influenced my making. As a science graduate of Human Ecology, I studied the interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary relationship between humans and their natural, social and built environments. I’ve had various experiences in different artistic disciplines such as principal owner/ designer of a successful design company, muralist company, design column writer, gardener as well as self taught ceramicist. I hope to create a dialogue between the clay that I form by hand and my lived experiences. Raw and authentic.

Hand Built Pitts Ceramics is the studio practice of artist Heather Waugh Pitts. Heather is a self-taught artist, with wide-ranging experience in interior design, painting, photography, and writing. She brings her years of practicing different artistic disciplines into her current ceramics practice.
