VINCE MONTAGUE
300 Sunrise Parkway
This lidded box is based on my interest in images of African mud huts. I think of houses and apartment spaces as modern huts, places of containment where we live most of our lives. The boxes where we dwell, sleep, and eat become a portal to our perception of ourselves. Inside every living space is the hidden energy of the person inhabiting that space; sometimes the energy can’t be contained. What I love about lidded vessels is the compulsion to raise the lid and see inside; it’s almost impossible for me not to lift a lid on a jar when I’m looking at one. Maybe that curiosity in me grew because of my experience of being raised in a California suburb and never knowing (but somehow instinctively understanding) that behind each manicured and quiet house lived secrets and shame, embarrassments and joy.
