ARTIST STATEMENT
My work takes me across many mediums, metal, wood, plaster, clay - each with its own possibilities, risks, excitement, and failures too. I’m continuously inspired by nature around me, particularly fractals - patterns I see in the sky, on the bottom of the lake, or on my skin. I see forms in snow drifts, ice cracks, and details of bones and bird skulls that I want to explore.
When it comes to studio time, I have a general idea of a form but the moment normally takes me on a new, unplanned journey. This is where it gets really exciting - clay is a wonderful medium. I handbuild my forms and I’m able to push a thin slab of clay in ways that I’m unable to do with other materials, providing I pay attention to basic principles like moisture and adhesion. When you’re building, you can change your mind and recycle the clay, which allows me to take risks. This makes it a very attractive medium to work with.
