ARTIST STATEMENT

Rooted in ancient techniques and inspired by the tactile intimacy of working with clay, my work transforms hand-built vessels into metaphorical containers for thoughts and ideas, transcending their utilitarian purpose. By incorporating foraged wild clay and recycled materials like glass and metal, I aim to foster mindfulness around consumption while introducing unexpected aesthetics that challenge traditional notions of the medium.

Influenced by John Cage’s philosophy of non-intention, my experimental methods blend control with serendipity, capturing the essence of specific environments and allowing each piece to emerge as a reflection of place and process.

About ILONA GOLOVINA

Ilona Golovina, originally from Stavropol, Russia (1987), is a Brooklyn-based ceramic artist known for her approach to texture, form, and structure.

Self-taught in ceramics, Ilona’s work is rooted in traditional vessel shapes but pushes boundaries through experimental textures, unique clay combinations, and forms that seem to defy gravity. This process not only enhances the aesthetic of her work but also reflects her commitment to recycling and repurposing materials.

Ilona’s work has been exhibited in New York City, Milan and Athens, and has been featured in  New York Times, AD Italy and Domino Magazine.
