ZIMRA BEINER
Black Composition
The verb "to hold" is important to me as it has numerous meanings in my work. Clay barely holds itself up - it has a tense relationship to gravity, particularly if the scale and form is pushed close to failure. Clay collapses, cracks, warps, and breaks easily. I'm interested in creating problems for myself - making the process more difficult than it needs to be. As ceramics is connected to volume, it often leads to open forms, and therefore holds food, water, plants, etc.. And if so, the relationship between inside and outside form is inevitable. Additionally, I'm interested in the relationship between objects and their display structures. I've therefore spent a lot of energy making pedestals, stands, furniture, shelves. In other words, and maybe most importantly, "to hold" means "to display". Again, this creates problems as I'm constantly unsure if the work is finished, static, autonomous, harmonious, awkward, funny, holds tension, and makes a contribution.
