Exhibition Submission Statement

Migrating is a daily meditation on containment, on what is inside and what is outside, on who is welcome and who is not, on what is visible and what is hidden. My work, inspired by the Urcunina Volcano (Galeras in Spanish) that towers above my hometown of Pasto in Colombia, expresses fragments of those meditations. Now that I live in Toronto, I think about my volcano when I create. Behind porcelain surfaces can hide as many memories as the observer can hold. Some memories are right there at the top, easy to spot. Others can remain dormant for decades, hard to express in a foreign world and sometimes even apparently gone forever.

Artist Statement

Technically speaking, a volcano is a mountain, typically conical, inside which lava, rocks, steam, and gas can be found and are emitted in times of activity. I grew up at the
foot of a volcano and was taught through weekly drills at school to never forget what it contains. Its Indigenous name in Quillacinga is Urcunina (Fire Mountain), and is much more helpful than its figurative name in Spanish, Galeras (Galley) when it comes to going beyond appearances. Now that I live in Toronto, I try to draw the same wisdom from making porcelain volcanoes. Behind their neat surfaces can hide as many memories as the observer can hold. Some memories are right there at the top, easy to spot. Others can remain dormant for decades, hard to express in a foreign world and sometimes even apparently gone forever. Until…

About the Artist

Carolina Delgado-Duruflé is a multidisciplinary artist. Born in Colombia, she opened the award-winning shop “Planta Baja” in Bogotá and practiced interior design for a decade before moving to Toronto in 2014. She has since focused on fine art, combining porcelain, glazes, metal, and glass to create islands of beauty through sculpture, shadow boxes, and installations. She was selected for Artist Project 2025, was featured in 100 Emerging Artworks: 2024 Women's Edition and on The Jealous Curator blog, and created a room installation for the reopening of Toronto’s historic Gladstone House in 2021. She received the Ontario Association of Landscape Architects’"Ground Award" in 2020 and previously exhibited at the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, Glasgow, the Banco de la República Art Museum, Bogotá, and Agora Art Gallery, New York. A daughter and a mother, she draws from her personal experience to reflect on tradition, movement and resilience through her art.
