ARTIST STATEMENT

Nadine Schelbert’s ceramic work centres on transformation and assemblage. Through the bending and intertwining of flat planes, she investigates what three-dimensional forms can emerge. She strives for curvatures that appear effortless, as if resulting from an elastic tension within the material. Voluptuous curves combine with sharp lines and angles to create a seductive ambiguity. They engage in a relationship of tension and release, motion and arrest, engagement and withdrawal.

In tandem with the sensuousness of bare clay, Nadine Schelbert explores glazes that encapsulate a sense of age. Dry and encrusted surfaces transform her pieces, infusing them with a frailness that borders crumbling. The glazed work moves away from sensuality towards ephemerality and transience.
