Black Tide
My work explores the fragile balance between creation and destruction, where moments of devastation can carry an unsettling allure. Black Tide embodies this tension, drawing on the haunting beauty of oil spills as they spread across our oceans. These slick, iridescent sheens, mesmerizing on the water’s surface, are a stark reminder of our dependence on oil and its lasting consequences. In this work, the oil is envisioned as an ancient bio-organism, once vibrant millions of years ago and now transformed into a substance that both sustains and imperils life.

Artist Statement
I am inspired by the dichotomy of beauty found at the intersection of nature and the profound impact humankind has imposed upon it. My work explores the fragile balance between creation and destruction,
where moments of devastation can carry an unsettling allure.
About the Artist
Joshua Lue Chee Kong is a Toronto-based interdisciplinary artist originally from Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. His practice includes ceramics, digital media, sculpture, and graphic design, exploring themes of cultural identity, migration, and the layered histories of the Caribbean and its diaspora. Drawing from his Chinese Caribbean heritage, Joshua’s work often examines memory and hybridity while embracing experimentation across traditional and
contemporary techniques.
Recent projects have incorporated 3D scanning, digital modeling, and speculative narratives as tools for storytelling and preservation. His sculptural and installation works delve into how history and personal experience intersect, often reimagining archival material to question dominant narratives.
Joshua has exhibited internationally and participated in artist
residencies across the Caribbean, Canada, UK and China.
Through his interdisciplinary practice, he seeks to create work that connects diverse audiences, sparking conversations around heritage, belonging, and the evolving identities of diasporic communities.
