Exhibition Submission Statement

I didn’t intend to make a box. I intended to remember. I remembered the quiet ritual of my grandmother wrapping things in cloth—sometimes a pot of food, sometimes clothes, sometimes things too delicate to name. She would gather the corners, fold them over one another, and tie them in a knot. I didn’t know it then, but I was watching a kind of ceremony. A gesture of care. Of presence. Of holding. Boghche is a ceramic memory of that gesture.

Now, living far from where I was born, I find myself returning to that image. Not just the form, but the feeling it held. The softness. The silence. The meaning inside something so simple. As an immigrant, I often wonder what I’ve carried with me, and what I’ve left behind. This piece is my response to that question.

It’s not just a box. It’s a place to keep what matters. The things we cannot wear or frame or explain—but still need close. The folds, the knot, the weight—they all speak.

Of memory. Of movement.

Of the invisible threads that still tie us to home. And maybe, of the quiet beauty of learning to hold ourselves.

About the Artist

Sepideh Chegini is an Iranian-Canadian ceramic artist and designer based in Toronto. Born and raised in Iran, she later moved to France, where she earned a Master’s degree in visual arts, before eventually settling in Canada. Her life across three countries deeply shapes her artistic voice—blending cultural memory, emotion, and design into each piece she creates.

Sepideh’s ceramic work is rooted in storytelling. She believes that every object should carry meaning and presence—something that connects emotionally and visually. Her art often explore themes of migration, identity, and care, while embracing bold forms, vibrant colours, and intentional beauty.

Drawing inspiration from both traditional rituals and modern design, she creates functional sculptures that feel personal and unique. For Sepideh, ceramics is not just craft—it’s a way to hold memory, to express individuality, and to bring joy, character, and warmth into everyday spaces.
